Your State’s mental health agency will be able to tell you how mental health services in your State are funded. Publicly funded mental health centers, such as those run by State, or city governments, have the cost of many services calculated according to what one can afford to pay. This is referred to as sliding-scale, or sliding-fee, basis of payment. States, which often work with Federal programs, for example, Medicaid, provide financial assistance to eligible individuals or families. The information about medical and health care assistance is available at your city social services departments, health and human services department, or Social Security office.
